All About Organic Natural Wine

Organic Natural wine is a type of wine that is made through a special process that makes them healthier and generally more interesting to drink. If you follow the developments of wine in media, you may well know that these wines are being found more and more across the country, with dedicated growers across the world creating world class drinks.

The natural wine scene has exploded in wine making region of the world, with various vineyards altering their processes to cater for certain volumes of natural wines. There has been plenty of media coverage of these vineyards and wineries, along with the boom in natural wine fairs that have attracted the attention of many wine drinkers.

Although natural wines may be considered as a relatively new thing, they have in fact existed for thousands of years, because when wine was originally made, there was no use of powdered tannins, enzymes, vitamins, packets of yeast, reverse osmosis, cryo-extraction, mega purple or any other additives and processes that are used in winemaking today. It was a lot simpler, made with crushed grapes by being fermented into wine.

What is the difference between natural wine and ‘normal wine’?

Natural wine and ‘normal’ wine are significantly different, through the way that they are made and what they contain. Natural wine uses minimum intervention, where vineyards are farmed organically and wild, naturally present yeasts are used rather than bought-in cultivated strains, as very little or no sulphur dioxide.

Natural wine is made with minimal chemical or technological intervention, from growing the grapes to the processes involved in turning them into wine. Some of the techniques and terms that would potentially class wine as ‘natural’ would be organically picked, dry-farmed, hand-picked, no added sugars/yeast, adjustment in acidity, no additives added, minimal or no fining or filtration and no added sulphites.

Since these methods are used through the natural wine making process, it means that natural wine is either sulphite free wine, or low sulphite wine, which has several benefits, such as being consumable by those with sulphite allergies, along with lowering the hangover you may get with normal wines, as well as being healthier due to the low/non-existent amounts of chemicals and additives.

The reason why natural wine has not taken the world by storm just yet, is that it is harder to make to a good quality, difficult to transport safely without affecting the consumable and is made a to a higher financial risk than normal wines.

Natural wines come in a huge range of different types, meaning there is something for everybody, You may have to pay a touch more than you would for ‘normal’ wine, but you will most definitely agree that they are generally much better quality, more interesting to drink and have significant health benefits over drinking wine packed with chemicals and additives.
